Thomas Alan Stephenson FRS (19 Ocak 1898 - 3 Nisan 1961), deniz anemonları konusunda uzmanlaşmış İngiliz doğa bilimci ve deniz biyoloğudur.

İlk yılları

Thomas Alan Stephenson, 19 Ocak 1898'de İngiltere'nin Surrey kentindeki Burnham-on-Sea'de doğdu.^[2] Wesleyan'lı bir bakan ve amatör botanikçi olan Thomas Stephenson^[3] ve Margaret Stephenson (doğumdaki soyadı Fletcher) çiftinin üç çocuğundan en büyüğüydü; bir erkek ve kız kardeşi vardı.^[2]

Eğitimi

Stephenson, 1920'den 1922'ye veya 1923'e kadar Aberystwyth'te Bilimsel ve Endüstriyel Araştırma Departmanı'ndan alınan bir bağışla desteklenen araştırma çalışmalarını üstlendi.^[2] Stephenson ayrıca orkideler üzerine bir dizi makale üzerinde babasıyla çalışmalara başladı. ^[2] İkili, 1920 ile 1926 yılları arasında 20'den fazla makale ve notun ortak yazarlığını yaptı.^[2] Bu çalışmanın çoğu Epipactis ve Dactylorhiza cinslerine odaklandı.^{[note 1]} Kew Kraliyet Botanik Bahçeleri'ndeki orkide herbaryumundan sorumlu botanikçi VS Summerhayes'e göre belki de en önemli katkıları, onların Orchis purpurella'yı (şimdi Dactylorhiza purpurella ) tanımaları ve tanımlamalarıydı. Bu çalışmaların ardından İngiliz florasının yaygın bir üyesi olarak bilinmekteydiler. ^[2] Diğer katkıları arasında ise Epipactis dunensis (artık bir tür olarak tanınmaktadır) ve Epipactis phyllanthes vardır.^[2] 1923'te ve yine Fleure'un desteğiyle Stephenson, Yüksek Lisansını aldığı şekilde Bilim Doktoru unvanını aldı.^[2] Derecesini desteklemek için sunulan yayınlar arasında hem deniz anemonları hem de orkideler yer alıyordu.

Stephenson, 1922'de Anne Wood ile evlendi.^[2] Güney Galler rıhtımlarını inşa eden Barry Graving Dock and Engineering Company'nin sekreteri Joseph Dore Wood^[3]^[5] ve Anna Eliza Wood'dan doğan ikiz kız kardeşlerin küçüğüydü.^[6]^[7] Stephensonların çocuğu yoktu.^[3] Stephenson 3 Nisan 1961'de 63 yaşında Londra'da bir hastanede öldü. ^[8]^[9]
