17. Akademi Ödülleri, 1944 yılının sinemadaki en iyi filmleri ödüllendirmek için verildi. O sene ödül töreninin tamamı ulusal olarak Blue Network'te (ABC Radio) ilk kez yayınlandı. Bob Hope, radyo izleyicileri için açıklama gerektiren film kliplerinin de yer aldığı 70 dakikalık yayına ev sahipliği yaptı.

Bu, En İyi Film kategorisinin beş filmle sınırlı olduğu ilk yıldır. Bu aynı zamanda bir kişinin aynı filmde aynı rolü oynadığı için hem En İyi Erkek Oyuncu ve hem En İyi Yardımcı Erkek Oyuncu dalında aday gösterildiği ilk ve tek seferdi: Going My Way'deki Peder Fitzgibbon karakteri için Barry Fitzgerald iki dalda aday oldu ve En İyi Yardımcı Erkek Oyuncu ödülünü kazandı.
